Problem

A piece of metal has a mass of 54 g54\,\text{g}. It is gently lowered into a measuring cylinder containing 50 cm350\,\text{cm}^3 of water. The water level rises to 68 cm368\,\text{cm}^3. (i) Find the volume of the metal. (ii) Calculate its density in (a) g cm−3\text{g}\,\text{cm}^{-3} and (b) kg m−3\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-3}. (iii) State, with reason, whether the metal will float or sink when placed in water.
