Problem

An RLCRLC circuit has a fixed inductance L=0.10 HL = 0.10\,\text{H} and resistance R=40 ΩR = 40\,\Omega. The capacitor can be switched between two values, C1=10 μFC_1 = 10\,\mu\text{F} and C2=40 μFC_2 = 40\,\mu\text{F}, to tune the circuit to two different radio stations. The circuit is connected to a 220 V220\,\text{V} (rms) supply. (a) Calculate the resonant frequency for each capacitor setting. (b) Determine the rms current in the circuit at resonance for each setting. (c) By what factor does the maximum current change when the capacitor is switched from C1C_1 to C2C_2?
