Problem
Ball A is thrown straight upward from ground level with an initial speed of 20m/s at time t=0 s. Exactly 1.0 s later, Ball B is released from rest at the edge of a balcony that is 25m above the ground. Both balls move along the same vertical line, air resistance is negligible, and g=9.8m/s2 downward.
(a) Write symbolic expressions for the vertical positions of Ball A and Ball B as functions of time t, measured from the instant Ball A is launched (t=0 s).
(b) Solve for the time tmeet at which the two balls pass one another.
(c) Calculate the height above the ground at which the meeting occurs.
(d) Determine the magnitude of each ball’s velocity at the instant they meet, and find their relative speed at that moment.
