Problem

Consider the function f(x)=x2+3x+2x+1f(x)=\dfrac{x^{2}+3x+2}{x+1}, defined for all x≠−1x\neq-1. (a) Write an explicit expression for the difference quotient f(x+h)−f(x)h\dfrac{f(x+h)-f(x)}{h}, where h≠0h\neq 0. Simplify the numerator completely so that no denominators in xx or hh remain. (b) Evaluate lim⁡h→0f(x+h)−f(x)h\displaystyle \lim_{h\to 0}\dfrac{f(x+h)-f(x)}{h} to obtain an explicit formula for f′(x)f'(x) for all x≠−1x\neq-1. Show all algebraic steps that justify the limit computation. (c) Determine the numerical value of f′(2)f'(2) and interpret this value as the slope of a tangent line on the graph of ff at the corresponding point. (d) Explain why f′(x)f'(x) exists at x=−1x=-1 or does not exist at x=−1x=-1, citing the behavior of the limit in part (b).
