Problem

The mean radius of the Earth may be taken as 6.4×106 m6.4\times10^{6}\,\text{m}. (a) By what depth d below the surface should one descend so that the value of g is reduced by 2% of its surface value? (b) At what height h above the surface will the value of g be reduced by the same 2%? (Take h≪Earth’s radius.) (c) Compare the numerical values obtained in (a) and (b) and comment briefly on the result.
