Problem

In the coordinate plane, let A(0,0)A(0,0) and B(b,0)B(b,0) with b>0b>0 be fixed points on the xx–axis. Two points C(x1,y1)C(x_1,y_1) and D(x2,y2)D(x_2,y_2) with y1>0y_1>0 and y2>0y_2>0 lie above the xx–axis, forming triangles △ABC\triangle ABC and △ABD\triangle ABD on the common base ABAB. (i) Prove that area(△ABC):area(△ABD)=y1:y2\displaystyle \text{area}(\triangle ABC):\text{area}(\triangle ABD)=y_1:y_2. (ii) Explain geometrically why this ratio depends only on the yy–coordinates of CC and DD and not on their xx–coordinates, provided both x1x_1 and x2x_2 lie between 00 and bb.
