Problem

A small frictionless ring of negligible mass is held at rest where three light strings meet in the same vertical plane. (i) Draw a labelled free-body diagram of the ring. (ii) String S1S_1 is horizontal and is pulled to the left with a force of 140 N140\,\text{N}. String S2S_2 is pulled to the right making an angle of 40∘40^{\circ} above the horizontal with an unknown tension TT. String S3S_3 is vertical and supports a block of mass 12 kg12\,\text{kg} hanging below the ring. Calculate the value of TT. (iii) Find the tension transmitted through string S3S_3. (Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}.)
