Problem
4. A flywheel starts from rest and is driven with a constant angular acceleration so that it reaches an angular speed of 120 rad s−1 in 8.0 s. Immediately after this, the driving torque is removed and the flywheel is allowed to slow down uniformly to rest in the next 40 s.
(i) Determine the angular acceleration during the speeding-up phase.
(ii) Calculate the number of revolutions made during the speeding-up phase.
(iii) Find the angular retardation during the slowing-down phase.
(iv) Compute the number of revolutions made during the slowing-down phase.
(v) If the radius of the flywheel is 0.50 m, obtain the total linear distance travelled by a point on its rim during the entire 48 s of motion.
