Problem

A refrigerator is rated "300 W, 220 V" during normal operation, but its compressor draws three times this power for about 3 seconds each time it starts. The refrigerator is to be protected by a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) installed in the live wire. (i) Calculate the steady-state current drawn by the refrigerator while running normally. (ii) Find the peak current drawn during the 3-second starting period. (iii) Suggest a suitable MCB rating from 6 A, 10 A or 16 A that will protect the refrigerator without nuisance tripping, giving a clear numerical justification. (iv) Describe two advantages of choosing an MCB over a traditional fuse for this application.
