Problem

A rectangular wire loop has height 0.60 m (vertical dimension) and width 0.40 m (horizontal dimension). Everywhere to the right of a fixed vertical line x=0x = 0 there exists a uniform magnetic field of magnitude 0.50 T directed into the page; to the left of that line the field is zero. At time t=0t = 0 the left edge of the loop just touches the boundary line at x=0x = 0. Starting at that instant the loop is pulled rightward along the xx-axis at a constant speed of 1.5 m/s so that an increasing portion of the loop enters the field region. (a) Derive an expression for the area of the loop that is inside the magnetic-field region as a function of time from t=0t = 0 until the loop is completely inside the region. (b) Using your result from part (a), obtain an expression for the magnitude of the induced electromotive force during this interval. (c) Determine the numerical value of the induced electromotive force at the instant when exactly one-half of the loop’s area is inside the magnetic-field region.
