Problem

A ball is projected vertically downward from the edge of a cliff with an initial speed of 4 m/s4\,\text{m/s}. Take the acceleration due to gravity as g=9.8 m/s2g = 9.8\,\text{m/s}^2. Answer the following questions in sequence. (i) Derive an algebraic expression for the distance sns_n covered by the ball during the nthn^{\text{th}} second of its motion. (ii) Using the expression obtained in part (i), calculate the distances travelled during the 2nd and the 3rd seconds of motion, giving each answer correct to one decimal place. (iii) Show that the difference between the two distances obtained in part (ii) is a constant quantity, and determine its value.
