Problem

Two identical copper wires, each of length 3.0 m and radius 0.40 mm, are available in a laboratory. Consider the following two configurations, both kept at constant temperature. (a) Let R0R_0 denote the resistance of ONE of the original 3.0 m wires. Express the resistance R(i)R_{(i)} of configuration (i) in terms of R0R_0. (b) Express the resistance R(ii)R_{(ii)} of configuration (ii) in terms of R0R_0. (c) Calculate the ratio R(i)R(ii)\dfrac{R_{(i)}}{R_{(ii)}}. (d) Both conductors are separately connected across a 12 V ideal battery. Compare the electrical power dissipated in configuration (i) to that in configuration (ii), and discuss one practical implication of your result for designing low-resistance cabling.
