Problem

A particle of charge +q+q enters point AA of a rectangular region that is divided into two equal halves, Region I and Region II, each of width dd. In Region I, a uniform magnetic field of magnitude BB points out of the page (+z+z–direction). In Region II, the field has the same magnitude but points toward the right (+x+x–direction). The particle’s initial velocity at point AA is due north (+y+y–direction) with speed vv. Air resistance and gravity are negligible. (a) Determine the direction of the magnetic force acting on the particle while it is in Region I. (b) Sketch or clearly describe the qualitative path of the particle within Region I, indicating any curvature. (c) As the particle crosses into Region II at point CC, determine the new direction of the magnetic force on the particle immediately after it enters Region II. (d) Using your answers to parts (a)–(c), draw or describe the complete qualitative trajectory of the particle from point AA until it exits Region II at point DD. Provide reasoning that connects the force directions in each region to the shape of the path.
