Problem

A trekker starts from a camp at the origin OO and follows three successive displacements: (i) Write w\mathbf{w} explicitly in terms of ı^\hat\imath and ȷ^\hat\jmath for a general value of λ\lambda. (ii) Obtain the resultant displacement R=u+v+w\mathbf{R}=\mathbf{u}+\mathbf{v}+\mathbf{w} in component form. (iii) Determine the value of λ\lambda for which the trekker’s net displacement R\mathbf{R} is perpendicular to the initial displacement u\mathbf{u}. Also find the magnitude of R\mathbf{R} for this value of λ\lambda.
