Problem

A steel plate of mass 200 kg200\,\text{kg} has dimensions 2.0 m2.0\,\text{m} (length) ×\times 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} (width). It is to be stored by placing it horizontally on two identical wooden beams. Each beam is 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} long and 0.10 m0.10\,\text{m} wide, and the plate rests symmetrically so that its weight is shared equally by the two beams. (i) Determine the pressure exerted on each beam by the plate. (ii) A second identical plate is now carefully placed on top of the first one. Calculate the new pressure on each beam. (iii) The beams can safely withstand a maximum pressure of 1.2×105 Pa1.2\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}. Will the beams remain safe after the second plate is added? Show your reasoning.
