Problem

A 1.50×103 kg1.50\times10^{3}\,\text{kg} automobile travels around a level, unbanked circular track of radius 70 m70\,\text{m}. The coefficient of static friction between the tires and the dry pavement is 0.450.45. (a) Calculate the maximum speed the driver can maintain without the tires skidding. (b) At a speed of 14 m s−114\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}, determine the magnitude of the frictional force acting on the automobile and state whether the force points toward or away from the center of the circle. (c) Heavy rain lowers the coefficient of static friction to 0.250.25. The driver still wishes to travel at 14 m s−114\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. Determine the minimum radius that the driver must choose (for example, by moving to a larger circular lane) to avoid skidding at this lower coefficient.
