Problem

A circular conducting loop is kept coaxially around a long solenoid. The solenoid current, which initially increases uniformly from 00 to I0I_{0} in 2 s2\,\text{s}, is then decreased uniformly from I0I_{0} to −I0-I_{0} in the next 4 s4\,\text{s}. The magnetic field inside the solenoid is directed from its left end towards the right end. (a) State the direction (clockwise/anticlockwise as seen from the right end) of the induced current in the loop during the first interval. (b) State the direction during the second interval. (c) In one sentence, explain how your answers are consistent with the principle of conservation of energy.
