Problem

A straight conductor passes horizontally through point OO from West to East carrying a current of 10 A10\,\text{A}. (i) A magnetic compass is placed 4 cm4\,\text{cm} directly above the wire at point AA. Which pole of the compass needle will point towards the wire? Explain your answer. (ii) Another identical compass is placed 4 cm4\,\text{cm} directly below the wire at point BB. Predict the deflection of its needle and justify your prediction. (iii) Without changing the positions of the compasses, the current in the wire is increased to 20 A20\,\text{A}. Describe the change, if any, in the magnitude and the direction of the magnetic field at points AA and BB. Give reasons.
