Problem

A body moves in a straight line on a smooth horizontal surface with an initial speed of 2 m s−12\,\text{m s}^{-1}. It is then acted upon by a constant forward acceleration of 0.2 m s−20.2\,\text{m s}^{-2} while it travels a certain distance. Immediately after this, the body enters a rough section of the same line where it experiences a uniform retardation of 0.4 m s−20.4\,\text{m s}^{-2} and finally comes to rest. The total distance travelled from the start to the point where it stops is 50 m50\,\text{m}. (a) Show by calculation that the distance covered while the body was accelerating is 30 m30\,\text{m}. (b) Determine the time taken during the accelerating part of the motion. (c) Calculate the time taken for the body to come to rest on the rough section. (d) Find the total time for which the body was in motion from start to rest.
