Problem

Consider the piece-wise defined function f(x)={x2+ax,x≤1,3x−a,x>1,f(x)=\begin{cases} x^{2}+ax, & x\le 1,\\ 3x-a, & x>1,\end{cases} where aa is a real constant. (i) Find the condition on aa that makes ff differentiable at x=1x=1. (ii) For the value(s) of aa satisfying part (i), determine whether ff has a local minimum at x=1x=1. (iii) For the same value(s) of aa, identify the intervals on which ff is increasing and those on which it is decreasing.
