Problem

In an industrial hydraulic press the small piston has cross-sectional area 5.0 cm25.0\,\text{cm}^2 and the large piston has area 200 cm2200\,\text{cm}^2. A metal block of weight 16 kN16\,\text{kN} is to be lifted. (i) Calculate the minimum force that must be applied to the small piston to just lift the block. (ii) If the area of the large piston were reduced to 100 cm2100\,\text{cm}^2 while the small piston area remained unchanged, determine the new force required on the small piston. (iii) For the original piston areas, find the pressure transmitted through the fluid when the block is just about to rise.
