Problem

Let b>1b>1 and let n>m≥0n>m\ge 0 be integers. (i) Show that bn>bmb^{n}>b^{m} and b−n<b−mb^{-n}<b^{-m}. (ii) Hence prove that the sum bn+b−nb^{n}+b^{-n} is greater than the sum bm+b−mb^{m}+b^{-m}. (iii) Using part (ii), arrange the numbers b2+b−2b^{2}+b^{-2}, b1+b−1b^{1}+b^{-1} and b0+b0b^{0}+b^{0} in increasing order.
