Problem

A body of mass mm is first taken to a small height hh above Earth’s surface and later lowered to a small depth dd below the surface. Assume h,RmE,dh,R_{ m E},d satisfy h≪REh\ll R_{\rm E} and d≪REd\ll R_{\rm E}. (i) Write the expression for the acceleration due to gravity at an altitude hh and hence obtain the exact expression for its weight WhW_h. (ii) Using the first–order binomial approximation, derive an expression for the fractional change in weight Wh−W0W0\dfrac{W_h-W_0}{W_0}, where W0W_0 is the weight at the surface. (iii) Write the corresponding exact expression for the acceleration due to gravity at a depth dd and hence obtain WdW_d. (iv) Using a first–order approximation, derive Wd−W0W0\dfrac{W_d-W_0}{W_0}. (v) Explain physically why the weight keeps decreasing on moving away from the surface both upward and downward, and state what happens to the weight at the centre of Earth.
