Problem

A pair of square plates, each of side 5.0 cm5.0\,\text{cm}, are placed parallel to one another in air so that the gap between them is 0.50 mm0.50\,\text{mm}. The plates are then pulled apart until the gap becomes 1.0 mm1.0\,\text{mm} while their areas remain unchanged. (i) Calculate the initial capacitance of the capacitor. (ii) Determine the percentage change in capacitance produced by increasing the separation.
