Problem

A medical imaging team wishes to design a scattering arrangement that will convert incident ultraviolet photons of wavelength 0.040 nm0.040\,\text{nm} into scattered photons of wavelength 0.045 nm0.045\,\text{nm} by collision with free electrons initially at rest. (a) Determine the scattering angle θ\theta required to obtain the desired scattered wavelength. (b) Evaluate whether the required angle found in part (a) is physically attainable. Clearly state the range of possible angles for single-scattering events with electrons at rest and compare with your calculated value. (c) If the angle is attainable, calculate the fractional loss in photon energy expressed as a percentage. If it is not attainable, explain quantitatively why the target scattered wavelength cannot be produced under the stated conditions.
