Problem

A service station uses a hydraulic lift with two pistons. The smaller piston on which the mechanic pushes has an area of 0.020 m20.020\,\text{m}^2, while the larger piston that lifts the car has an area of 0.30 m20.30\,\text{m}^2. The car together with the platform has a mass of 1500 kg1500\,\text{kg}. (i) Calculate the pressure that must be produced in the hydraulic fluid to just begin to raise the car. (ii) Determine the minimum force the mechanic must apply on the smaller piston to create this pressure. (iii) If the mechanic actually applies a force of 1500 N1500\,\text{N} on the smaller piston, find the additional upward force available on the larger piston beyond the weight of the car.
