Problem

A car is travelling along a straight road with a speed of 20 m/s20\,\text{m/s}. The driver applies brakes producing a uniform retardation that brings the car to rest in 8 s8\,\text{s}. Immediately after stopping, the car accelerates in the reverse direction at 1.5 m/s21.5\,\text{m/s}^2 for 4 s4\,\text{s}. (i) Find the distance the car travels while slowing down to rest. (ii) Calculate the distance moved while reversing. (iii) Determine the total displacement of the car from the point where the brakes were first applied, after the entire motion described above is completed.
