Problem

A heavy wooden box rests on a smooth horizontal ice surface. Two students, A and B, push it from opposite sides along the same straight line. (i) Student A pushes the box towards the east with a force of 50 N50\,\text{N}, while student B pushes it towards the west with a force of 50 N50\,\text{N}. Identify the type of forces acting on the box and explain the likely motion of the box. (ii) Student B now increases his push to 70 N70\,\text{N} towards the west, while student A continues to push with 50 N50\,\text{N} towards the east. Explain the change in the net force on the box, state its magnitude and direction, and describe the effect this will have on the motion of the box. (iii) In both cases above, classify each applied force as a push or a pull and justify your answer.
