Problem

A sample containing NN identical atoms (mass mm each) is confined to a cube of side length LL. The atoms move freely between perfectly elastic collisions with the walls. (a) For a single atom moving only in the +x+x or −x-x direction with speed ∣vx∣|v_x|, determine the change in its xx-component of momentum in a single collision with the wall perpendicular to the xx-axis. (b) Calculate the time interval between two successive collisions of this atom with the same wall. (c) Using your results from parts (a) and (b), determine the average force that this atom exerts on that wall. (d) Generalize your result to all NN atoms by replacing vx2v_x^{2} with the average value ⟨vx2⟩\langle v_x^{2} \rangle. Derive an expression for the pressure in terms of NN, mm, LL, and ⟨vx2⟩\langle v_x^{2} \rangle. (e) If the velocities are distributed isotropically, relate ⟨vx2⟩\langle v_x^{2} \rangle to the root-mean-square speed vrmsv_{\text{rms}} and write the final expression for the pressure in terms of number density n=NL3n=\dfrac{N}{L^{3}}, mm, and vrmsv_{\text{rms}}.
