Problem

A transparent glass slab of uniform thickness is placed on a printed page. (i) The slab is 1.0 cm1.0\,\text{cm} thick, yet the letters appear to be only 0.67 cm0.67\,\text{cm} beneath the upper surface of the slab when viewed normally from air. Calculate the absolute refractive index of glass. (ii) The same slab is completely immersed in water (refractive index =1.33=1.33) and observed normally from air. If the refractive index of glass with respect to water is 1.121.12, determine the apparent thickness of the slab under these conditions.
