Problem

A train emerges from a tunnel while moving with a speed of 20 m/s20\,\text{m/s} on a straight track. Immediately on exit, the driver applies the brakes so that the train experiences a uniform retardation of 1.0 m/s21.0\,\text{m/s}^2 for 15 s15\,\text{s}. The brakes are then released and the train continues at the new constant speed for 40 s40\,\text{s} before it is accelerated uniformly at 0.50 m/s20.50\,\text{m/s}^2 for 10 s10\,\text{s}. Answer the following. (i) Find the speed of the train at the end of each of the three stages. (ii) Compute the distance travelled in each stage. (iii) Calculate the total distance covered during the entire 65 s65\,\text{s} interval. (iv) Draw a properly scaled velocity–time diagram for the complete motion and show on the graph how the distance in part (iii) can be interpreted geometrically.
