Problem

Incoming customer calls to a service centre are classified as Type A, Type B or Type C. These types together exhaust all possibilities and are mutually exclusive. (i) The probabilities of the three types occurring are 0.5,0.30.5,0.3 and 0.20.2 respectively. A call of Type A is resolved in the first attempt with probability 0.900.90, a call of Type B with probability 0.750.75, and a call of Type C with probability xx. If the overall probability that a randomly received call is resolved in the first attempt is 0.840.84, form an equation in xx and determine its value. (ii) Compare the ease of resolving Type C calls with that of the other two types on the basis of your answer to part (i).
