Problem

Consider the vectors p=2i^−j^+4k^\mathbf{p}=2\hat{i}-\hat{j}+4\hat{k} and q=−i^+3j^+2k^\mathbf{q}=-\hat{i}+3\hat{j}+2\hat{k}. (i) State the algebraic (component) formula for the scalar product of two vectors expressed in the Cartesian basis and explain in not more than two sentences why the mutual perpendicularity of i^,j^,k^\hat{i},\hat{j},\hat{k} justifies the formula. (ii) Prove that the scalar product is distributive over vector addition, that is, (a+b)⋅c=a⋅c+b⋅c(\mathbf{a}+\mathbf{b})\cdot\mathbf{c}=\mathbf{a}\cdot\mathbf{c}+\mathbf{b}\cdot\mathbf{c} for any vectors a,b,c\mathbf{a},\mathbf{b},\mathbf{c}. (iii) Verify the result obtained in part (ii) for the vectors p,  q\mathbf{p},\;\mathbf{q} and r=3i^+2j^−5k^\mathbf{r}=3\hat{i}+2\hat{j}-5\hat{k} by evaluating (p+q)⋅r(\mathbf{p}+\mathbf{q})\cdot\mathbf{r} and comparing it with p⋅r+q⋅r\mathbf{p}\cdot\mathbf{r}+\mathbf{q}\cdot\mathbf{r}. State your conclusion clearly.
