Problem

A cue ball of mass 0.20 kg0.20\,\text{kg} moving on a level billiard table at 4.0 m s−14.0\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} strikes another identical ball that is initially at rest. After the collision the first ball travels at 2.5 m s−12.5\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} making an angle of 37∘37^{\circ} to its original line of motion in the horizontal plane. (i) Calculate the magnitude and direction (angle with the original line of motion) of the velocity of the second ball just after impact. (ii) Verify whether the collision may be treated as elastic by computing the kinetic energies before and after impact.
