Problem

A particle moves along a straight line. Its velocity vv (in meters per second) is described as a piecewise-linear function of time tt (in seconds) as follows. Velocity function v(t)v(t): • For 0≤t≤30\le t\le 3, vv decreases linearly from 66 to 00. • For 3<t≤53< t\le 5, vv remains constant at 00. • For 5<t≤95< t\le 9, vv increases linearly from 00 to 88. • For 9<t≤129< t\le 12, vv increases linearly from 88 to 1010. • For t>12t>12, vv is constant at 1010. (a) Determine the acceleration a(t)a(t) for all t≥0t\ge 0. Give a piecewise description and include units in your answer. (b) Identify every value of tt at which a(t)a(t) is not defined. For each such value, state the one-sided limits of a(t)a(t) as tt approaches that point and describe the graphical feature of v(t)v(t) that causes the non-differentiability. (c) Sketch the graph of a(t)a(t) for 0≤t≤150\le t\le 15. Label all intercepts and discontinuities clearly. (d) The particle’s position function is s(t)=∫0tv(u) dus(t)=\displaystyle\int_{0}^{t} v(u)\,du with s(0)=0s(0)=0. Without performing any additional integration, determine on which subintervals of [0,15][0,15] the graph of ss is concave up and on which it is concave down. Justify your answer in terms of the sign of a(t)a(t).
