Problem

A simplified model of a desktop photocopier uses a cylindrical photoconductive drum that acquires a uniform positive charge of +6 μC+6\,\mu\text{C}. During the copying process a single toner particle of mass 4.0×10−14 kg4.0\times10^{-14}\,\text{kg} carrying a charge of −3.2×10−16 C-3.2\times10^{-16}\,\text{C} is released at a distance of 0.20 mm0.20\,\text{mm} from the axis of the drum. Treat the drum as if its entire positive charge were concentrated at its axis for the short interval considered. Answer the following: (a) Calculate the magnitude of the electrostatic force acting on the toner particle at the instant it is 0.20 mm0.20\,\text{mm} from the drum axis. (b) Determine the initial acceleration of the particle caused by this force. (c) Show explicitly that the charge on the toner particle is quantised, and find the number of excess electrons it carries. (d) If the particle instead carried a charge of −1.6×10−16 C-1.6\times10^{-16}\,\text{C} while all other conditions remained unchanged, comment on how its acceleration would compare with the value obtained in part (b).
