Problem

During a thunderstorm a spherical hail stone of radius 3 mm falls through the air at a constant speed. (1) Calculate the weight of the hailstone. (density of ice = 920 kgm−3920 \text{ kgm}^{-3} and g=9.81 Nkg−1g = 9.81 \text{ Nkg}^{-1} ) (2) If the viscosity of air is 1.8×10−5 Nsm−21.8 \times 10^{-5} \text{ Nsm}^{-2}, calculate the speed at which the hailstone is falling. (3) The frictional forces between the hailstone and the air cause the hailstone to melt without any loss of mass during its journey downwards, turning it into a raindrop. Given that the density of water is 1000 kgm−31000 \text{ kgm}^{-3}, would you expect the raindrop to fall at a smaller speed, the same speed or a higher speed compared to the hailstone? (4) The frictional forces between the hailstone and the air cause the hailstone to melt without any loss of mass during its journey downwards, turning it into a raindrop. Justify your answer.
