Problem

When anhydrous AlCl₃ is added to water, the resulting solution becomes significantly acidic, and Al(OH)₃ precipitate can form upon addition of more water or base. Justify, with reasoning at the ionic and molecular level, whether the initial addition of AlCl₃ to water should be classified primarily as a chemical change.
