Problem
A uniform solid disk of mass 1.5kg and radius 0.20m slides across a horizontal tabletop. At t=0 the center of mass of the disk is moving to the right at 3.0ms−1, and the disk is not rotating. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the disk and the table is 0.30. Air resistance is negligible.
(a) Derive expressions for the linear acceleration of the disk’s center of mass and the angular acceleration about its center during the time the disk is slipping.
(b) Determine the time elapsed from t=0 until the disk begins to roll without slipping.
(c) Calculate the speed of the center of mass at the instant pure rolling begins.
(d) Compute the total mechanical energy lost to thermal energy from t=0 until the onset of rolling without slipping.
