Answer the following questions related to the minimum speed required for a body to leave a planet’s gravitational influence.
(i) Explain why this minimum speed is independent of the mass of the body that is projected from the planet’s surface.
(ii) Suppose the radius of Earth suddenly becomes one-half of its present value while its mass remains the same. Predict qualitatively how the minimum speed needed to escape would change, and give a brief justification.
