Problem

A researcher is designing a flat, square window that must conduct no more than 150  J150\;\text{J} of thermal energy per second when the inside surface is kept at 22  ∘C22\;^{\circ}\text{C} and the outside surface at −8  ∘C-8\;^{\circ}\text{C}. The window will be made from a uniform glass pane of thermal conductivity k=0.80  W ⁣⋅ ⁣m−1 ⁣⋅ ⁣∘C−1k=0.80\;\text{W}\!\cdot\!\text{m}^{-1}\!\cdot\!^{\circ}\text{C}^{-1}. The pane thickness is fixed at 0.80  cm0.80\;\text{cm} due to architectural constraints. (a) Calculate the maximum allowable window area that satisfies the researcher’s requirement. (b) Suppose the researcher instead keeps the area found in part (a) but doubles the pane thickness. Determine the new rate at which energy would be conducted through the window. (c) Evaluate whether doubling the thickness, as described in part (b), is sufficient if the allowable rate were tightened to 100  J s−1100\;\text{J}\,\text{s}^{-1}. Justify your answer with quantitative reasoning.
