Problem

Carbonyl sulfide (OCS) is an atmospheric trace gas structurally analogous to carbon dioxide. A skeletal outline of the molecule is provided below, with the atoms arranged linearly in the order O–C–S. Using this information, analyze the Lewis representation of OCS. (1) Add all non-bonding electron pairs necessary so that each atom attains its most realistic valence-shell electron configuration while maintaining the O–C–S connectivity given. (2) Compute the formal charge on each atom in the completed structure you have drawn. (3) Determine the net charge of the entire molecule and verify that it is consistent with the calculated formal charges. (4) Evaluate whether the octet rule is fully satisfied for each atom and briefly comment on how any deviation may influence the stability of the structure.
