Problem

Three identical small conducting spheres A, B, and C are mounted on insulating stands so they can be touched together in any sequence without losing charge to the surroundings. Initially, sphere A carries +12 nC+12\,\text{nC}, sphere B carries −6 nC-6\,\text{nC}, and sphere C is neutral. The following sequence of operations is performed: (a) After step 1, determine the charge on each of spheres A and B. (b) After step 2, determine the charge on each of spheres B and C. (c) After step 3, determine the final charge on each of spheres A, B, and C. (d) For the entire three-step process, compute the net number of electrons that moved onto or off of sphere C. Indicate whether electrons entered or left sphere C overall. (e) Discuss how the results you obtained demonstrate conservation of electric charge for the three-sphere system throughout the entire sequence.
