Problem

Fix a positive real number pp and define sp(x)=sin⁡(px)+bxs_p(x)=\sin(px)+bx on the closed interval 0≤x≤π0\le x\le \pi, where bb is a real constant (which may depend on pp). (a) Compute sp′′(x)s_p''(x) in terms of pp. (b) For the interval 0≤x≤π0\le x\le \pi, describe analytically the sub-intervals on which the sign of sp′′(x)s_p''(x) depends only on pp (that is, is independent of bb). (c) Determine all positive values of pp for which there exists at least one real bb such that sps_p is concave up on the entire interval [0,π][0,\pi]. Provide a rigorous justification and give an explicit description of the allowable bb for those pp.
