Problem

Two PES spectra, each from an atom with 10 electrons, show the following peak positions (binding energy in eV; relative intensities in parentheses): • Spectrum A: 870 (2), 48 (2), 24 (6) • Spectrum B: 1100 (2), 63 (2), 35 (6) One spectrum is from Ne and the other from Na⁺. Identify which spectrum corresponds to which species and justify your answer using effective nuclear charge and shielding considerations.
