Problem

A uniform aluminium conductor is made by joining two cylindrical pieces end to end. Piece 1 is 2.0 m2.0\,\text{m} long and 3.0 mm3.0\,\text{mm} in diameter, while Piece 2 is 1.0 m1.0\,\text{m} long and 1.5 mm1.5\,\text{mm} in diameter. The resistivity of aluminium is 2.7×10−8 Ω m2.7\times10^{-8}\,\Omega\,\text{m}. (i) Calculate the resistance of each piece separately. (ii) Hence find the total resistance between the free ends of the composite wire. (iii) When a potential difference is applied across the composite wire, what percentage of the total potential difference appears across Piece 2?
