Problem

A 2.5 kg2.5\,\text{kg} block is projected upward along a rough plane that is inclined at 20∘20^{\circ} to the horizontal with an initial speed of 5.0 m s−15.0\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the plane is 0.150.15. (i) Determine the magnitude and direction of the acceleration of the block while it is moving up the plane, and also while it is sliding back down. (ii) Calculate the distance the block travels up the plane before coming to instantaneous rest. (iii) Find the total time elapsed from the instant the block is projected to the moment it returns to the starting point. (iv) Compare the speed of the block just before it returns to the starting point with its initial speed of 5.0 m s−15.0\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. Explain briefly why the two speeds are different.
