Problem
Two identical rectangular frames share the same left and right vertical conductors. The upper rectangle is A–B–C–D–A (A at upper left, B upper right, C middle right, D middle left). The lower rectangle is C–E–F–D–C (E at lower right, F lower left). Components are placed as follows:
• R1 between A and B, R2 between B and C, R3 between C and D, R4 between D and A.
• Lower perimeter: R5 between D and F, R6 between F and E, R7 between E and C.
• A vertical conductor B–E contains resistor R8 and a switch S in series.
An ideal battery of emf ε is connected with its positive terminal at A and negative terminal at F. All other conductors are ideal.
(1) Part 1: (a) With switch S open, determine a minimal set of independent closed loops for the circuit. For each loop, list the components that lie on it.
(2) Part 2: (b) Close switch S. State the new total number of independent closed loops and describe how the loop membership of R8 changes.
(3) Part 3: (c) While S remains closed, the conductor BC is physically removed so that no path exists directly between B and C. Determine the resulting number of independent closed loops and justify your conclusion.
