Problem

An inertial reference frame S′S' moves with constant velocity u\mathbf{u} relative to inertial frame SS. A rigid body of total mass MM has instantaneous center-of-mass velocity V\mathbf{V} in frame SS and rotates with angular speed ω\omega about its center of mass. Address the tasks below with complete algebraic justification. (a) Show that the translational kinetic energies measured in the two frames differ by a quantity that depends only on MM, u\mathbf{u}, and V\mathbf{V}. (b) Prove that the kinetic energy associated with rotation about the center of mass has the same value in both frames. (c) Explain physically why rotational kinetic energy is unaffected by a shift to any other inertial frame moving at constant velocity.
