Problem

A radioactive nuclide AA decays to the daughter nuclide BB which, in turn, decays to a stable product CC. At t=0t=0 only NA0N_{A0} atoms of AA are present. (i) Write the differential equations governing NA(t)N_A(t) and NB(t)N_B(t) and hence derive an expression for NB(t)N_B(t) in terms of NA0N_{A0}, λA\lambda_A and λB\lambda_B. (ii) Obtain the condition for the activity of BB to attain its maximum value and show that the corresponding time is tmax=1λB−λAln⁡ ⁣(λBλA).t_{\text{max}}=\frac{1}{\lambda_B-\lambda_A}\ln\!\left(\frac{\lambda_B}{\lambda_A}\right). (iii) The half-life of AA is 10 h10\,\text{h} and that of BB is 2 h2\,\text{h}. If NA0=2×1020N_{A0}=2\times10^{20}, calculate: (a) the time (in hours, correct to two significant figures) at which the activity of BB is maximum, (b) the maximum activity of BB (in Bq).
